About Shiatsu

Head illustrationShiatsu is a form of massage involving gentle pressure, stretching and manipulation along meridians or pathways of energy within the body.

Literally translated from the Japanese as 'finger pressure', Shiatsu, together with acupuncture and Chinese herbs has been a fundamental part of Oriental Medicine for over 4000 years, evolving and developing into the form that is practised today.

About Ki

One of the main differences between Western medicine and
Oriental medicine is the basic concept that there is a life force called Ki energy which flows through all things, animate and inanimate in a harmonious, balanced way. This Ki energy flows through our bodies along meridians or pathways rather like rivers flow on the Earth. As long as the Ki flow is unhampered, whether by internal or external factors, we can maintain the physical, emotional and spiritual balance which we know as "health".
However, many things can block this flow of life force (or energy): bad posture, stress, and tension, scar tissue, trauma, accidents, genetic weaknesses and an unhealthy life style!

These blockages cause disharmony and pain and, if this imbalance is left, eventually ill-health will develop. As the quality of Ki changes, the symptons associated with a lack of flow will improve. Shiatsu is a therapy that works on the individual as a complete being – not just the physical body, but also on an emotional and/or mental level.

About the session

Each session lasts approximately one hour. The first session may be slightly longer since your practitioner will take a detailed case history to develop a complete picture of your health according to the principles of oriental medicine.

The session usually takes place on a padded mat or futon at floor level, although it is possible to receive shiatsu sitting on a special shiatsu massage chair. You will remain fully clothed throughout the session.

Following the treatment there may be a feeling of increased vitality and you may feel invigorated yet relaxed. The treatment consists of balancing the meridian energy through tonification and sedation techniques.

Shiatsu is caring and supportive, and it helps you to
observe and understand what is going on within you.
